“…the questions of I, Banquo feel immediate and real”
-Broad Street Review

Adult tix $20 (+$5 fee)
Youth tix $15 (+$5 fee)

I, Banquo returns for a limited engagement—an electrifying solo performance by award-winning international theatre artist Tim Crouch that reimagines Macbeth through the eyes of Banquo, Macbeth’s closest friend and fellow thane.

In Shakespeare’s original play, Banquo is murdered at Macbeth’s command. Here, he rises from beyond the grave to confront his former brother-in-arms—and us. Speaking directly to the audience, Banquo revisits the witches’ prophecies and invites us to wrestle with the same questions of ambition, loyalty, and moral choice. What would you have done? Could you have resisted? Or would you, too, have been tempted by fate?

Drawn entirely from Shakespeare’s language and infused with Crouch’s bold theatricality, I, Banquo fuses classical text with contemporary storytelling in a gripping, fast-paced experience.

“Just imagine,” Banquo urges us. “Imagine your best friend for life… your brother-in-arms… imagine this closest of all friends is actually evil. And you’ve been utterly blind to it.”

It is a haunting meditation on betrayal—the kind that shakes not only your faith in others, but your faith in yourself. Don’t miss this powerful return engagement, available for a limited run only.

Run time is approximately 50 minutes. Appropriate for ages 12+ due to elevated language and description/depictions of violence.

Enhancing school curriculum, I, Banquo offers a vibrant, accessible, and engaging entry point into the world of William Shakespeare. In this fast-paced solo performance, one actor embodies the character of “Banquo” through bold physical storytelling, accompanied by a live electric guitar score. The heightened theatricality draws students into the drama.

About Hedgerow’s Studio Series

Paul Harrold (Banquo) returns to Hedgerow, where he was last seen in Endlings. Philly credits include Carl Perkins in Million Dollar Quartet (Walnut St Theatre), A Man For All Seasons (Lantern Theatre) The Owl and the Pussycat and Other Nonsense (Quintessence Theatre) 12th Night (Delaware Shakespeare), Thanksgiving Play and Old Stock (Curio Theatre). He is a proud company member of Curio Theatre, where he will be appearing this spring in Sacco and Vanzetti.

Tim Crouch (Playwright) Tim is a playwright, director, performer and theatre maker based in Brighton, UK. He was an actor before he started to write and he still performs in much of his work. Tim’s plays are characterized by an attention to their audience. There is a devotion to the liveness of theatre and a recognition that the audience are the ultimate collaborators in the creation of meaning at the point of performance. The plays are meticulously scripted but engineered in such a way to ensure that no two performances are identical. From the inanimate objects donated by the audience in My Arm, to the unrehearsed second actor in An Oak Tree, to the audience writing in I, Cinna (the poet) and their reading in Total Immediate Collective Imminent Terrestrial Salvation, to the audience embodying otherness in ENGLAND and Truth’s a Dog Must to Kennel. Tim’s plays are narratively driven but pay as much attention to their form as to their story.

Stephen Patrick Smith (Director) is a celebrated regional actor and director of 20 years. Smith played Jack Burden in the world premiere of All the King’s Men directed by renowned director (founder of Trinity Rep) Adrian Hall and has performed as a company member with Utah Shakespeare Festival. He directed Jewel Walker’s Tuesday in 2005 for Amaryllis Theatre Company - Received Barrymore Award for Outstanding Ensemble, and Outstanding Choreography/Movement. Smith has taught movement at the National Theatre of the Deaf and Acting at Villanova University, where he previously received an MA in Theatre Arts. He also received his MFA from the Professional Theatre Training Program with the University of Delaware. Smith is the Head of the Drama Department at Delaware County Community College.
