About Hedgerow Theatre

Hedgerow Theatre is a regional resident theatre dedicated to cultural enrichment, artistic excellence, and training in the theatre arts. Since its founding in 1923, Hedgerow has produced a wide-ranging repertoire—from classical to contemporary works—designed to entertain, provoke dialogue, and deepen human understanding. Through professional productions, educational programming, and fellowship opportunities, the company fosters a close-knit, collaborative environment for artists, students, and audiences alike.

Founded by Jasper Deeter in the spirit of the Rose Valley Arts and Crafts Movement, Hedgerow was established as an independent, artist-driven space. Early in its history, the theatre embraced inclusive practices, including a commitment to racial integration, and has since played a key role in the regional theatre landscape, influencing generations of artists and companies.

Today, Hedgerow advances this legacy through a focused commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The organization works to expand access and address longstanding inequities in the field by prioritizing representation across all aspects of its work. Hedgerow actively engages artists and communities whose voices have been historically underrepresented, including individuals from communities historically underrepresented across race, gender, sexual orientation, disability and neurodivergence. Hedgerow strives to foster an intentionally welcoming and inclusive environment.

About Hedgerow Theatre Company

Founded in 1923, Hedgerow Theatre is dedicated to providing cultural enrichment, engaging entertainment, and training in theatre arts and management. As stewards of a nineteenth-century grist mill turned theatre building, Hedgerow produces whole-hearted, resonant theatre in an intimate 100-seat venue. The company offers extensive educational programs through theatre school, in-school residencies, and touring programs, and provides performance, technical training, and theatre management opportunities through a resident fellowship program. Hedgerow has been referred to as the “the mother of all Philadelphia theatres” because renown companies – including Freedom Theatre, People’s Light, and Curio Theatre Company - can trace their roots back to this storied theatre in Rose Valley. Having celebrated our 100th anniversary in 2023, Hedgerow faces a historical moment of transformation toward the spirit of innovation and inclusion that earned it a place in the national theatre conversation.

Hedgerow Theatre is committed to building an inclusive and welcoming space for all individuals and actively seeks to intentionally break down barriers to support and celebrate diverse (especially underrepresented) perspectives in all facets of the organization and its work.
