Hedgerow Horizons encompasses new play readings, works in progress and experimental shows with shorter runs run in repertory with our Signature and Heritage Series productions. Producing Artistic Director Penelope Reed is pleased to introduce the new Speakers' Series and topic-related Play-readings focusing on American Values and Human Rights.

 Speakers' Series: The Morals and Mores of American Colonial Life 
 Carol Fireng 
Sunday, June 22 - 6:30 p.m. at Hedgerow Theatre
Ms. Fireng, who taught Russian, English and German for 20 years in the Lower Merion School system, has served as Chair of the Board of the Delaware County Historical Society, where she helped develop its highly-regarded Passport to History program. She is also vice-chair of the Chester Historical Preservation Society. Her talk will examine the differences between Colonial American morals, attitudes, values and approaches to educating children versus the British views of the time. $15; $10 for students & groups.
 Speakers' Series: From Rose Valley Arts & Crafts to Hedgerow Theatre

Passion, collaborative spirit and personal authenticity are sewn into the very fabric of rustic Rose Valley founded by Will Price. Believing that theatre was “man’s companion, mirror, critic, teacher and source of amusement,” Jasper Deeter, Hedgerow’s founder, longed for a theatre that played great works in ensemble without the commercialism of New York. He found a resonant spirit and an artistic haven in Rose Valley, surrounded by nature, the beauty of Arts and Crafts architecture, a charming, gristmill playhouse and a community passionate about the arts. Ms. Potter, the foremost authority on Rose Valley and a member of the Rose Valley Museum committee, will present a slide show lecture about the artists and the art that has flourished in Rose Valley. $15; $10 for students & groups.
 Speakers' Series: Women’s Voices for Freedom 
 Nancy Webster 
Sunday, June 29 - 6:30 p.m. at Hedgerow Theatre
Prominent Delaware County historian, Nancy Webster will discuss women's roles in Colonial America and the valuable contributions these women made to the society of the time and our culture of today. Ms. Webster, AICP, is Principal Planner with Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and the project manager/author of the 1989 cultural resource management study for the Brandywine Battlefield NHL.She is also a professional historian and continues to publish and lecture on Delaware Valley topics.$15; $10 for students & groups.
 Speakers' Series: Slavery, the Underground Railroad & the Quaker Catalyst for Freedom  
 Nancy Webster 
Monday, June 30 - 6:30 p.m. at Hedgerow Theatre
Delaware County historian Nancy Webster returns with a talk focusing on prominent African American Quakers and the Underground Railroad in Delaware County. $15; $10 for students & groups.

Play Readings
 Hawthorne Sampler

Sunday, June 22 - 7:30 p.m. at Hedgerow Theatre
Although, best known for his novels, A Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables, Nathaniel Hawthorne was also a prolific short story writer. The Hawthorne Sampler features three Hawthorne's stories: The Prophetic Pictures, Lady Eleanor's Mantle and his most famous short story, Young Goodman Brown, showcasing Hawthorne's use of nature -- its primitiveness, and as a source of inspiration, American historical themes, his use of gothic elements and allegory. Hawthorne is widely credited by scholars as being America's first professional writer. This new show is being developed as a tour offering to area high schools and colleges; teachers are encouraged to attend. Free.
 Candida

Monday, June 23 - 7:30 p.m. at Hedgerow Theatre
George Bernard Shaw, who for years only permitted his plays to be produced in America by Hedgerow’s Jasper Deeter. Philadelphia actors Lenny Haas and Mary Lee Bednarek lead the cast in a reading which brings alive Shaw's poignant examination of marriage that was generations ahead of its time, leaping beyond an examination of male/female relationships and deepening our understanding of human need. Free.
 Angel Voices

An interactive study of modern woman, her need for her own unique voice and the mundane challenges that keep her shackled in contemporary society -– a work in progress designed for audience participation. Free.
 Stand By The River 
 by Mark and Joanne Sutton Smith 
Monday, June 30 - 7:30 p.m. at Hedgerow Theatre
This musical about the Underground Railroad, directed by Michael White and featuring Newton Buchanan, Demetria Joyce Bailey, Alan Kutner, is based on true events that took place in Philadelphia between 1885-1855. The show was initially workshopped at Hedgerow Theatre in 2000 and has subsequently been further developed in New York City. It is under consideration for a future Hedgerow production; the new reading will help explore its further development. Free.
A discussion with the playwright follows the performance. Reservations are not required.
